    Description

JB Owens Pottery Empire Tile 6" Cornucopia Arts & Crafts Art Nouveau Colorful
J.B. Owens manufactured tile under the brand EMPIRE - Empire Floor & Wall Tile Company from 1923-1928 as a branch of his pottery efforts. Norman Karlson's Encyclopedia of American Art Tiles shows a fruit basket designed tile in a similar style, but does not picture this lovely cornucopia tile, perhaps it is somewhat rare. It is undeniably Owens, clearly marked EMPIRE on the reverse. This tile is unique in its diamond orientation, not made to sit horizontally in a row of tile, perhaps with its vibrant color this was made to show off their capability as tiles were marketed across the united states. It is certainly eye catching. The tile is nicely framed to hang on the correct orientation. The framing is perfect, and I did not want to disturb it, so I have not removed the tile to examine the edges. There is no indication of any damage.  The tile measures approximately 6x6 inches square, framed just under 7.5 inches square. The framed tile measures apx 1.25 inches thick.
