    Description

From a New England estate. Scarce antique J.B. Owens Pottery bottle/bud vase with slender, elegant neck and bulbous base. Hand painted pansies against deep brown/orange/gold background, under clear glaze. Signed by artist Steele. Measures 8"H X 4"W at bulbous base. Stamped "2 Utopian J. B. Owens 1069".
J.B. Owens started his own pottery company in 1891. He built a new plant and started manufacturing pottery in 1896. The Utopian line was a high-glaze brown ware with underglaze slip painting similar to Roseville, Rookwood and Weller. Owens manufactured pottery for only 10 years and won critical acclaim but closed in 1907. The Utopian line is their most recognizable.
